Powerless in the United States

The third iteration of the ongoing Powerless in the Pandemic report, tracking utility service disconnections and corporate profiteering. This expanded edition was co-authored by Energy and Policy Institute and provides data on fossil fuel-price volatility and gas-utility disconnections.

The report found that American utilities shut off power to households roughly 4.2 million times in the first 10 months of 2022 while returning record profits and billions of dollars to shareholders.

Tiger Moth tracks and maintains a database of nationwide electric and gas utility disconnects. In addition, we reviewed financial disclosures from the utility companies involved in these disconnections.
